Erik Hinterbichler

My name is Erik Hinterbichler, and I’m a software developer specializing in user interface design. I design and write apps for Mac, iOS, and the web. This page has some background about myself. Check out the Projects page to see some of the apps I’ve written.

I was born in Albuquerque, NM and was valedictorian at Albuquerque High School. I was the placekicker and punter on the football team. In 2001 I set school records for most field goals in a season (17), career (28), and longest field goal (55 yards). I was selected as the first team USA Today All-American kicker. I played cello for four years in the Albuquerque Youth Symphony and performed in concert tours in Mexico, Germany, and Spain. I also made the New Mexico All-State Symphony Orchestra four years in a row.

In 2002 I attended Dartmouth College, where I double majored in computer science and math. I was also a kicker and punter for the Dartmouth Big Green football team and played in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra. I graduated top 20 in my class and received Summa Cum Laude honors.

In 2006 I enrolled in graduate school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I received my MS in computer science with an emphasis in human-computer interaction. I also played two years as a cellist in the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra.

After graduating in 2008, I moved to the Bay Area and joined Pattern Insight, a startup spun out of the University of Illinois. This company used research developed at UIUC to search for fuzzy patterns in source code and log files. I was the lead UI/UX developer and wrote the web frontend for our two main products, Code Insight and Log Insight. I also joined the Mission Chamber Orchestra of San Jose as a cellist, where I played for over 10 years.

In 2012 Log Insight was acquired by VMware, and I joined VMware along with the rest of the Pattern Insight engineering team. I was a staff engineer and the lead UI developer for Log Insight.

In 2015 I left VMware to join a home services startup called ezhome. I was the lead UI/UX engineer and helped design and build our customer web app, landing pages, and the mobile app for our technicians. I also designed and built the UI for our interactive floorplan viewer.

In 2018 I joined Apple as a frontend web engineer, where I’m currently working on iCloud Photos. I’ve also built several Mac and iOS apps for fun as side projects. My interests include cello, kicking, computer games, and martial arts. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills and New Mexico Lobos, and I became a fan of the Golden State Warriors after moving to the Bay.
